Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT) in the port of Umm Qasr, Iraq, has handled its four millionth TEU. The milestone was achieved during the recent unloading of the Yang Ming vessel YM Mutuality.
BGT, part of the ICTSI group, is the only terminal in Iraq to have handled four million TEU. Romeo Salvador, BGT chief executive officer, says, “We are proud to be the leading player in the Umm Qasr port, and will continue to invest in our people, services and port infrastructure as part of our unwavering commitment to the development of Iraq’s port industry.”
ICTSI has invested more than US$ 300 million to modernise and expand the multipurpose terminal. This investment includes the construction of three new berths, the rehabilitation of three existing berths and the acquisition of new port equipment including post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes.
Currently, BGT is the only terminal in the port of Umm Qasr capable of handling 14,000 TEU container vessels, a feature that has helped attract new liner services to the facility in recent times.
