Freight forwarder Seafrigo Group will open a new warehouse in the US state of New Jersey to cater for growing online demand for food products.
The new 85,000 sq foot facility – the French forwarders’ fifth in the area – is scheduled to open this year and will provide additional, automated capacity in order to cater to customer fulfilment requirements. It will also include a dry ice production plant within the facility in order to be able to maintain all frozen products at the correct temperature.
The e-fulfilment facility will have the capacity to handle large throughput volumes of specialist food orders, Seafrigo said.
Philip Decker, Seafrigo’s vice president of processing in the US, said: “E-commerce is a key part of our business in the Americas and the exponential growth of all types of groceries being bought on line is fuelling this expansion.
“We have built our reputation as the go-to provider for the management of the inspection, import and export of beef meat and pork products into the US.
“With this new facility we can take this one step further with the e-fulfilment, handling and packing of chilled and frozen products ready for online orders.”
The forwarder pointed to consumer research from NielsenIQ that showed the number of Americans buying all types of groceries online nearly doubled in 2020.
