Salalah sets new records

In its recently published annual results, Salalah Port Services has confirmed that 2021 ended on a positive note with both its container and general cargo terminals achieving record throughput levels.

Last year Salalah’s container terminal handled 4.51 million TEU up from 4.34 million TEU in 2020, a growth rate of 4%. The company retained all of its major customers while Maersk’s contribution to the total business remained consistent during the year.

The Port of Salalah’s general cargo terminal handled 16.9 million tons during 2021, compared to 15.3 million tons in 2020, up by 10%. This increase is mainly due to higher demand in export markets for gypsum, limestone and liquid bulk commodities.

Braik Musallam Al Amri, Chairman, Salalah Port Services, says, “Container demand growth is losing some momentum amid mounting headwinds, but carriers will continue to rake huge profits. Management feels that the bulk of risk from the highly unpredictable container market will reside with shippers in 2022, which is shaping up to be another year of severe disruption, under-supply, and extreme cost.”
