Drone Delivery Canada adds university campus flights – Air Cargo News

Drone Delivery Canada has received certification from Transport Canada to carry out flights between two University of British Columbia medicine sites.

The Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) will allow the company to carry out commercial drone delivery for the University’s Faculty of Medicine’s ‘Remote Communities Drone Transport Initiative’ (DTI) programme fbetween its Village of Fraser Lake (VFL) and Stellat’en First Nation (SFN) sites.

The DTI program is currently utilising the company’s drone logistics solution to enable a defined two-way delivery flight route, using the Sparrow drone and its DroneSpot takeoff and landing zones, to transport a variety of cargo.

The two sites are about 5 kms apart and a journey by road would take around seven minutes.

All operations will be conducted in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations and Transport Canada flight authorisations. Flights will be monitored by DDC using the company’s proprietary FLYTE software system as a managed service.

“We are very pleased to move to BVLOS operations for UBC’s DTI program. This new SFOC approval is another testament in demonstrating effective and efficient operations and further allows the commercial viability of drone logistics solutions within the healthcare vertical market. We are also very appreciative of our collaborative relationship with Transport Canada and their overarching support of the industry,” said Steve Magirias, chief executive officer of Drone Delivery Canada.

In January, Drone Delivery Canada said development and testing of its ‘Canary’ cargo drone is progressing on schedule.
