The Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) reached a significant milestone in its ongoing expansion project with the arrival of the heavy lift vessel Zhenhua 35. This vessel carried the first shipment of equipment needed for the terminal expansion, including four super post-panamax ZPMC quayside container gantry cranes. With a 72m outreach, these cranes are engineered to twin-lift two 65 ton containers and undertake heavy lifts of up to 100 tons. Six electric rubber-tyred gantry (eRTG) cranes, equipped with automation and remote control features, also arrived as part of the shipment.
According to SCCT CEO, Keld Mosgaard Christensen, “The new ship-to-shore and eRTG cranes are not merely technological upgrades but symbolise a commitment to enhancing capabilities and meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving industry.”
APM Terminals, which has a majority stake in SCCT, has also entered into an agreement with Kalmar to supply an electric Reach Stacker (eRS) to be piloted at SCCT. The eRS is now fully operational at SCCT, and the initial feedback is said to have been positive. Over the next few months, APM Terminals and Kalmar will work together to collect data from this pilot, with the aim of advancing the electrification of terminal operations. Keld Mosgaard Christensen added: “Electrification is one of the cornerstones of our decarbonisation vision, and this pilot is an opportunity to accelerate the maturity and adoption of electric equipment.”
