The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Ukraine has confirmed that Russian military forces have attacked Antonov (Hostomel) Airport, a major cargo hub in the country.
“National Guard units are fighting” to defend the international cargo airport following Russian military action to take control of the airport, said the MIA. The attack on February 24 comes as Ukrainian airspace has been closed and the region declared an active conflict zone.
In a statement about the National Guard Units on February 24, the MIA said: “In the course of actions they shoot down 3 Russian helicopters out if 34 that crossed the border line.
“Russian forces use assault aircraft: helicopters and jet fighters.
“We were forced to inflict artillery fire on the airport where the enemy forces landed.”
Antonov Airlines operates the airport, which is owned by the Antonov aircraft manufacturing company.
